Hello dear siblings in faith,

The topic of "languages" or "speaking in tongues" occupies me greatly. I try to inform myself well about it, but honestly, I don't know what is right and what is wrong. I have also spoken with other siblings about it and tried to understand the scripture, but in the end, I often remain undecided.

Many say that "languages" in the Bible refers to normal foreign languages. In the past, they say, this gift was used to spread the gospel—because it was not yet available in all languages. But today, since the word of God is accessible worldwide, this gift is no longer necessary.

I also don't understand why one should speak in languages at all when it is said that one speaks "mysteries with God". Because if I want to talk to God, I can do so in thoughts or in prayer—without words that I don't understand myself.

But then there are also siblings who say that speaking in tongues is something right and cite, for example, 1 Corinthians 14 as evidence. However, I saw a video that deals with this chapter. It was explained there that it is about actual foreign languages—something like this: If someone is in an Italian-speaking congregation and only speaks Spanish themselves, and they want to say something, then someone is needed to interpret it into Italian so that it is understood.

I have also never read in the Bible that it explicitly speaks of a "tongue language"—but always only of "languages". It is also not described how this "tongue language" sounds concretely.

Dear siblings, I hope someone can help me and explain this topic to me in detail and based on the scripture. I want to follow the truth and not accept charismatic teachings if they are not truly biblical. God bless you 🫶🏼✝️

Bible Verse for this Prayer

1 Corinthians 14:13-14

For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
