Bible Scripture Romans 12:17 (KJV):
“Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.”
Reflection :
This verse confronts our natural human instinct. When someone hurts us, betrays us, disrespects us, or mistreats us, the flesh wants to strike back, repay harm, or defend itself in anger.
But God calls us to a higher standard.
“Recompense… evil for evil” means paying someone back with the same wrong they gave you.
Paul says don’t do it.
Why?
Because:
• Retaliation pulls us into sin.
• Revenge keeps us chained to the offense.
• Responding in evil makes us look like the one who harmed us.
Instead, God calls us to:
✅ Walk in integrity
✅ Respond with righteousness
✅ Maintain godly character
✅ Do what is honorable before all people
This doesn’t mean being weak or letting others abuse you. It means refusing to let someone else’s behavior drag you out of your character and out of God will.
Your response is your testimony.
When you choose peace over payback, maturity over reaction, and honesty over hostility you reflect Christ.
God, not man, is your defender.
God, not revenge, is your vindication.
You don’t have to fight dirty when God fights for you.
Prayer:
Father God,
Help me to resist the urge to repay evil with evil. Guard my heart from bitterness, anger, and revenge.
Give me the strength to respond with wisdom, humility, and righteousness.
Lord, let my actions honor you, even when I am hurt or mistreated. Teach me to trust you as my defender and judge.
Keep my character pure, my heart clean, and my responses aligned with your Word.
Help me to walk in integrity before all people, so that my life reflects the light of Christ. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
